Laura & John // Engagement Photoshoot // Daventry Country Park // Northamptonshire
For Daventry Country Park engagement photography, Laura and John’s spring session was about keeping things relaxed and giving them space to get used to the camera together. We talked, laughed, found a field of buttercups and got caught in a proper downpour at the end. It was a very good way to start.
Why have an engagement session before the wedding?
Laura and John and I had spoken a lot before meeting in person, so it was good to finally have a proper chat face to face. They were easygoing from the start, and that matters far more than knowing what to do with your hands.
An engagement session gives you a chance to see how I work before the wedding. There is no pressure to perform. I give a little direction when it helps, keep the conversation moving and let you settle in together. By the time the wedding arrives, the camera feels much less like a big thing in the room.
It also gives me a chance to learn more about you. The stories, the in jokes and the way you naturally are around each other all help me photograph people rather than poses.
What did Laura and John’s session feel like?
This was a warm spring session, with the feeling that summer was not far away. At the time, I knew that many visitors followed the circular walk around the reservoir, so I walked in a different direction with Laura and John to find a quieter feel for their photographs.
We found a field full of buttercups around 5 minutes from the car park. It was a bit of a find, especially as I had visited the park many times before and had not noticed it. The open field gave the photographs a soft, simple backdrop. Laura and John quickly relaxed, which is always the point.

AS A PHOTOGRAPHER, CAPTURING WEDDINGS AND ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOTS IN MY HOMETOWN OF NORTHAMPTONSHIRE IS ALWAYS A PLEASURE!
After that, we spent time in a wooded area and kept chatting as we went. The photographs came from the conversation and the small moments between them, not from asking them to stand and smile for ages.
What happened when the weather changed?
Near the end of the session, a few spots of rain turned into a serious downpour in no time at all. I was soaked, Laura and John were laughing, and the session ended with a run back to the car park.
That is wedding photography in Britain sometimes. It is not always about getting perfect weather. It is about keeping calm when plans change and recognising that the laughter during the unexpected bits often makes the best memories.

AN ENGAGEMENT PHOTOSHOOT IS SUCH A GREAT WAY TO GET USED TO THE CAMERA BEFORE YOUR WEDDING DAY!
Can I give current photography advice for Daventry Country Park?
This story reflects Laura and John’s historical session only. I need to confirm current permissions, access and first hand photography locations at Daventry Country Park before offering practical location guidance for a new session. That is worth checking before making plans, rather than assuming an old route or spot still works.
Are you thinking about an engagement session?
If you are feeling a bit unsure about being photographed, join the club. Most couples do at first. An engagement session is simply time together, a walk, a chat and a chance to see that you do not need to be models to get photographs you love.
Ask away, any time. I will keep it relaxed and make sure you enjoy it.

The whole photoshoot flew by, and before we knew it, we had spent two hours at the park. I mentioned earlier in the blog about how beautiful the weather was, which it was to a point. Near the end of the shoot, it began to rain, it began with just a few spots of rain, but before we knew it, it was absolutely pouring it down, and I mean pouring it down. Within a minute, I looked like a drowned rat, and we all ran back to the car park laughing so much!
Laura, John, I cannot wait to meet you both again in July, and all of your family and friends. I just know your wedding day is going to be epic! If you need me at any point, you both know I am just a phone call or WhatsApp message away!
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.
