For The Stanwick Hotel outdoor wedding photography, Samantha and Keelan’s summer celebration is a lovely example. Their ceremony took place in the Garden Pavilion, with greenery all around, then the day moved through the gardens and into Reflections for the meal, speeches and a very lively evening.

What’s The Stanwick Hotel like for an outdoor wedding?

I’ve photographed weddings at The Stanwick Hotel in both summer and autumn, which helps, because the venue feels quite different with the seasons. The outdoor Garden Pavilion is a great ceremony option when the weather’s kind, with greenery all around. Reflections is a proper indoor alternative, with wooden beams, chandeliers and fairy lights.

Guests have room to be outside after the ceremony, across the gardens and courtyards, and the Garden Conservatory gets plenty of natural light looking straight out onto them. I’ve also photographed wedding morning preparations in the house, in the large lounge and conservatory area, where there’s room for everyone and good light.

How did Samantha and Keelan start the day?

I had photographed Samantha and Keelan before the wedding at an engagement session with their 2 dogs, so we already knew each other when the wedding arrived. Samantha and her friends got ready in the house at the hotel, using the large lounge and conservatory. The morning had the usual buzz, then came the first look with her dad.

I’m a sucker for that moment. There’s a pause, a reaction, and sometimes someone tries not to cry and completely fails. It’s never the same twice.

Keelan arrived with his friends in good spirits, then guests made their way to the Garden Pavilion. A young ring bearer had an important job and took it very seriously. Samantha wore a dramatic dress and properly owned it.

What happened after the Garden Pavilion ceremony?

Once Samantha and Keelan were married, I gave them room to receive hugs and congratulations. Guests were outside, children were enjoying themselves and people had a drink in hand. It was a relaxed summer reception rather than a queue of photographs.

I organised the group photographs in the grounds, then left the couple free to get on with the day. There’s plenty of space here for groups and portraits, so I don’t need to keep you away from everyone for ages. Around 15 minutes is normally enough.

The gardens and courtyards are useful for those portraits, but also for the photographs that happen while nobody is looking for them. A friend laughing with a drink. A child running across the lawn. A parent watching everything unfold. It all belongs.

How did the reception turn into a party?

Reflections hosted the wedding breakfast, speeches and evening celebration. The day took on a warmer feel as everyone moved inside, then the dance floor started to fill. After the first dance, Samantha had a family dance with her dad, mum and sisters. It wasn’t a big formal show. It was a proper family moment, and everyone was right there for it.

The party built from there. I photograph the full evening, including dancers, the people talking at the edges and the quieter little moments between songs. A gallery should bring back the atmosphere, not just give you a collection of dance floor photographs.

Why does documentary coverage suit The Stanwick Hotel?

The venue has natural places for people to gather, indoors and out, which suits the way I work. I photograph the day as it unfolds, with only a short portrait session. I’ll organise confetti and groups, then blend in, get on with your guests and look for the real stuff.
