Going back to a venue you know well always feels good.
I cover Rugby, Warwickshire and plenty further afield, and Ashton Lodge Country House is always a good one to come back to. I’ve photographed several weddings here now, and it really suits couples who want a relaxed day without having to worry about how it’ll look.
Michelle and Luke’s wedding was exactly that. Laid back, family centred and full of laughter, with loads of children running around, which gave the whole day a lovely warmth.

Morning Prep, A Lamborghini & A Creative Plan
I got there early, as always. Not to take over, just to walk the grounds, check the light and look for some new portrait spots. Even at venues I know well, I don’t go on autopilot.
Luke had hired a Lamborghini and wanted a photo in front of it. They’d also mentioned they liked the idea of a champagne spray shot.
So we planned to combine the two.

That one was saved for later.
One of the handy things about Ashton Lodge is that both of you can get ready on site without accidentally bumping into each other. I photographed Michelle’s prep and the lads getting ready, and both rooms were brilliant. Lots of laughing, not many nerves, plenty of excitement.
First Looks & Real Reactions
Morning prep flew by.
Michelle had a first look with her dad, and with her bridesmaids and the children too. I asked everyone to cover their eyes as she walked in. The kids tried their very best not to peek.
When they finally turned around, Michelle was beaming. Big smiles and real reactions, which matter far more than any pose.
That’s what documentary wedding photography is all about.
Ceremony, Confetti & Surprise Alpacas
The ceremony room at Ashton Lodge was full. Every seat taken, every face smiling.
Once they’d tied the knot, we headed out into the Warwickshire sunshine for confetti. The grounds here are ideal for it, with plenty of space, a clean backdrop and good light.
Then came the surprise.
Alpacas.
Just after confetti, they turned up. Guests fed them, laughed and got involved. A few brave adults, including the bride and groom, held carrots in their mouths and let the alpacas eat straight from them.
It was chaotic. It was hilarious. I won’t be forgetting it.

Drinks Reception, Speeches & Live Music
The drinks reception spread out across the grounds. Kids running about, guests hugging, real conversations going on.
We kept the group photos quick, then slipped away for a few relaxed portraits around the gardens before heading inside for speeches.
The speeches were heartfelt and funny in equal measure.
After the wedding breakfast, guests moved into the bar while the room was turned around for the evening. Michelle and Luke had booked a live singer, and within minutes people were dancing and singing along.
At one point I quietly nipped upstairs to photograph Michelle opening a gift Luke had given her earlier. The quiet moments matter just as much as the loud ones.
Evening Portraits, Champagne Spray & A Packed Dancefloor
As the light softened over the Warwickshire countryside, we headed back outside for a few evening portraits and that champagne spray in front of the Lamborghini.
Bold, fun and slightly wild. Exactly what they wanted.
Then came the cake cut and first dance.
Within seconds, the dancefloor was full. No awkward hovering, just straight into it. The kind of party that reminds me why I love doing this.
