The West Mill wedding photographer: an honest guide

If you’re searching for a West Mill wedding photographer, you should know straight away that I haven’t photographed a wedding at The West Mill yet. But I’ve photographed one at The River Mill, which is also part of Darley Abbey Mills, so the old brick, the cast iron and the River Derwent aren’t new to me. I photograph weddings across Derbyshire from my base in Northamptonshire, and this page is what I’d plan for at The West Mill, built from the venue’s own information.

What I’d be looking for at The West Mill

Brick, iron and a lot of window

The West Mill is a Grade I listed former cotton spinning mill. The venue describes bare brick walls, barrel vaulted ceilings and big Georgian windows, with a south facing courtyard, gardens and a riverside walk overlooking the weir outside. That mix of inside and out is what I’d be making the most of. The brick and beams give you a warmer, moodier look for speeches and the evening. The river gives you something brighter and more open. Two completely different feels, without going far.

Getting married at The West Mill

The venue lists the Cotton Quarter as its main ceremony space, with exposed brick, original blue brick floor tiles, cast iron beams and Georgian windows. Big windows matter for ceremony photos, because they put natural light on your faces when it counts. For an outdoor ceremony, the venue points to the south facing courtyard by the river.

Dinner and the evening

After the ceremony, the venue describes the Breakfast Floor for your meal, with round or trestle tables, and the Spinning Room, an open plan space, for the evening. Bands, DJs, photo booths, whatever you’ve got planned. A different room for each part of the day is handy for photos, because each part of the wedding ends up with its own look.

At The River Mill, the warm, industrial room really suited the speeches and the dancing later on. I’d expect something similar here, with the brick and iron doing a lot of the work once the lights go down.

Staying over

The venue currently lists two places to stay on site:

  • The Mill House: eight en suite bedrooms, including a newlyweds’ suite, plus a living room and a kitchen.
  • The Mill Cottage: self catered, with three double bedrooms, a twin room and a private courtyard. Handy for the night before.

If you get ready on site, I can photograph the morning and be at the ceremony a few minutes later, rather than racing across Derby.

Where I’d plan your photos

Portraits take around 15 minutes. I’d start with the riverside walk and the weir for something open and bright, then use the old brick for a few warmer shots. Confetti in the courtyard, a quick group photo against the mill if you want one, and then everyone back to the drinks. I’ll adjust all of that once I see the light on the day.

The West Mill wedding FAQs

Have you photographed weddings at Darley Abbey Mills?
Yes, at The River Mill. I photographed Rebekah and David’s summer wedding there, with confetti on the cobbles, portraits by the river, a ceilidh and a sparkler exit to finish.

Can we hold an outdoor ceremony at The West Mill?
The venue lists its south facing courtyard, by the River Derwent, for outdoor ceremonies. Check timings and the wet weather plan with them.

Can we bring our own drinks?
The venue mentions a no corkage policy for daytime drinks. Worth confirming the details when you book.

Is the venue wheelchair accessible?
The venue is the best people to ask. It’s a listed mill over several floors, so talk through access for anyone who needs it before you book.

What time does the music have to stop?
The venue has previously listed a 12.30am finish for music. Check the current timings for your date.

How I work

Nervous about being photographed? Join the club. Most of my couples say exactly that when we first chat. I work in a documentary way, so for most of the day I’m quietly photographing what happens. The hugs, the nerves, your mate’s questionable dance moves. When something needs organising, like groups or confetti, I’ll step forward for a few minutes, then go back to blending in.

A bit about me

I’m Lewis, born and raised in Northamptonshire. I’ve photographed over 250 weddings since 2015, around the UK and abroad in Mexico and Cyprus. I was also named Best Wedding Photographer in the Midlands 2026 at The I Do Wedding Awards, based on couples’ reviews, which I’m still quietly chuffed about.
