Lisa & John’s Intimate Wedding at The Upper House, Stoke-on-Trent
In May, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Lisa and John’s wedding day at the stunning Upper House in Stoke-on-Trent. It was my first time shooting at this venue, and I’m already hoping it won’t be my last, what a gem! Nestled in the Staffordshire countryside, The Upper House is a real hidden treasure, perfect for couples looking for a relaxed, countryside wedding with a touch of elegance.
From the moment I had a catch-up with Lisa and John a few weeks before their day, I knew this wedding was going to be something special. They didn’t want a big fuss, just a beautiful, intimate celebration shared with their favourite people, plenty of time to enjoy the day, and a laid-back vibe from start to finish.
A Warm Welcome at The Upper House
I arrived at The Upper House to find it bathed in glorious sunshine, ideal weather for their outdoor ceremony. Lisa was getting ready on-site, and although she didn’t want any bridal prep photos (totally fair. your day, your way!), I couldn’t resist popping up to say hello. She looked absolutely radiant, buzzing with excitement, and you could just feel how ready she was to get married.
Downstairs, John arrived looking sharp and full of smiles. He handed out personalised pocket watches to his close friends, a thoughtful touch and a great moment to photograph. Then, as guests began to arrive, the hugs started flowing, and I was in my element capturing all those emotional reunions and excited faces.
The Grand Staircase & Outdoor “I Dos”
There was one photo Lisa really wanted from the day, her walking down the grand staircase inside The Upper House. And honestly? What a staircase! It has serious wow factor, and it made for a brilliant moment. Lisa descended with the biggest smile, beaming with happiness, and it was one of my favourite frames of the day.
I dashed back outside in time to capture her walking down the aisle towards John. Their ceremony was full of laughter, with some cracking readings that had everyone chuckling. And just like that, they were officially Mr and Mrs. Big cheers and even bigger grins all round!

Confetti, Hugs & Golden Hour Vibes
Straight after the ceremony, Lisa and John did a receiving line, something I actually think more couples should consider. It gave them a chance to speak to every guest, soak in all the love, and share plenty of hugs (which, if you know me, you’ll know I love photographing!). Then came the confetti shot, and it did not disappoint. Guests really went for it, showering the newlyweds with petals and cheers, it was such a joyful moment.
We moved into the drinks reception next, and there was such a lovely energy in the air. Everyone was relaxed, enjoying their drinks, catching up, and just having the best time. Lisa and John had a guest who was also taking some snaps, and they even sent me a few shots of me working, so kind, and such a fun surprise to receive after the day!
Portraits & Group Shots (But Not Too Many!)
As Lisa and John wanted their wedding captured as naturally as possible, we kept the group photos and portraits short and sweet, just enough to get the essentials, without pulling them away from their guests for too long. We found a few pretty spots around the venue (which isn’t hard, the Upper House has some lovely backdrops) and captured some relaxed, joy-filled portraits that matched the feel of the day perfectly.

Speeches Full of Laughter & Love
After some time mingling, everyone headed indoors for the wedding breakfast and speeches. The speeches were absolutely brilliant, equal parts funny and heartfelt. There were proper belly laughs, some teary eyes, and lots of clinking glasses. You could feel the love in the room, and I think that’s what makes smaller weddings so powerful, there’s such a strong sense of connection between everyone there.
Evening Celebrations & Dance Floor Fun
As the evening reception kicked off, more guests started to arrive, bringing fresh waves of excitement and, yes, more hugs. Lisa and John cut their cake and then bravely took to the dance floor for their first dance. They’d mentioned they weren’t big dancers, but honestly, they smashed it! They looked like they were having a blast, and soon enough, the dance floor filled with guests throwing shapes and singing along.
There’s something magic about photographing people letting loose and having the time of their lives, it’s a brilliant way to end a wedding day.

A Few Final Words
Before I knew it, it was time for me to pack up and head home, memory cards full of golden moments. A huge thank you to Lisa and John for trusting me to capture your day and for making me feel so welcome. You created a celebration that was heartfelt, fun, and unapologetically you. And to the staff at The Upper House, you did an amazing job keeping everything running smoothly. Top marks all round.
