Charlie & Darren’s Wedding at The Granary at Fawsley: A Beautiful Spring Celebration

At the start of April, I photographed Charlie and Darren’s wedding at The Granary at Fawsley in Northamptonshire, where I photographed plenty of weddings over the years. Countryside views, restored barns and one of the friendliest, hardest working venue teams around.

I was one of the recommended photographers at The Granary at Fawsley, so I got to know the place well through every season. It has since closed for weddings, but if you’re planning a day at another barn style venue in Northamptonshire, I’d love to hear about it.

A Relaxed Morning Full of Smiles

I arrived early, as usual, to say hello to the venue team and get my bearings. I was booked from bridal prep through to the first dance, and it turned out to be a cracker of a day.

Charlie and her bridal crew were already in full swing when I got there, sipping bubbles and laughing while hair and make up got on with it. The sun was out, the playlist was spot on and the whole room was relaxed, which is exactly how a wedding morning should feel.

Charlie had the biggest smile on her face all day. I don’t think it dropped once. The room was a nice mix of excitement and happy nerves.

Charlie and Her Dad

One of my favourite moments of the day was Charlie’s dad seeing her in her dress for the first time. He looked so proud, and I’m fairly sure nobody in that room got through it dry eyed. He gave her a thoughtful gift too, which clearly meant a lot. As a natural and candid wedding photographer, this is the stuff I’m there for. Nobody’s posing, it just happens.

The Boys Looking Sharp

Before the ceremony, I headed over to see Darren, who was just as excited as Charlie. He looked sharp in his suit, and his son and best men matched him nicely. Plenty of laughs, a few nerves, and the usual little bits I love photographing, buttonholes being pinned, final suit checks and cheeky jokes before the aisle.

Guests Arriving and the Ceremony

With the morning prep done, I went to say hello to guests as they arrived. The weather was still glorious, warm sun and clear skies, and there was a real buzz about the place.

As everyone made their way into the ceremony room, I photographed the hugs, the laughter and the waiting. Then Charlie walked down the aisle, and Darren got a bit emotional when he saw her. A lovely, honest moment.

The ceremony itself had tears, laughter and everything in between. Exactly what a wedding should be: your people, in one room, feeling all of it.

Confetti, Cuddles and Couple Portraits

After the “I do’s,” we headed outside for the confetti throw, one of my favourite bits of any wedding to photograph. Charlie and Darren’s guests didn’t hold back.

During the drinks reception, we did a few relaxed group shots and I wandered about photographing guests mingling. Then a few couple portraits. Charlie and Darren didn’t want to be away from their guests for long, which I completely get. The day goes fast, and being with your people matters.

Portraits are important, but so is actually spending your wedding with the people you invited. I keep them short so you get both.

Speeches, Golden Hour and That Champagne Moment

After portraits, everyone headed in for the wedding breakfast. The wedding speeches were a proper mix, emotional one minute, hilarious the next. More happy tears and plenty of applause.

As dinner wrapped up, the light outside had gone full golden hour, so we nipped back out for a few more portraits. The sunset played along nicely. Golden hour shots are always among my favourites, and these were no exception.

With evening guests arriving, things picked up. The cake was cut, the first dance happened, and then the dance floor filled up fast. Arms in the air, the lot.

One Last Shot to End the Day

Just before I packed up, we headed back outside for one last portrait I’d been wanting to try for a while: the champagne spray shot. It was a first for me, and I had a feeling Charlie and Darren would be up for it.

Darren popped the cork and champagne went everywhere. Charlie’s reaction was priceless, half joy, half surprise. A brilliant way to finish the day.

(If you fancy doing the same on your wedding day, just say. Maybe not with the expensive bottle, though.)

Wrapping Up

Before I knew it, it was time to pack up, say my goodbyes and head home with a full memory card and a big grin.

Charlie and Darren, thank you for having me. You made me feel so welcome, and I loved every minute of your wedding. Wishing you all the happiness in the world.

And a big thank you to the team at The Granary at Fawsley, who were brilliant, as always.
