Swallows Nest Barn is a converted barn in the Warwickshire countryside, right on the edge of the Cotswolds. Tall stone walls, old brickwork and fields all round it. It’s exclusive use, and the south facing courtyard is the heart of the place. Drinks outside, guests chatting, and that warm evening light when a summer wedding gets it right.

The venue’s yours for the day, so you can properly settle in. It’s licensed for civil ceremonies inside and out, there’s a dressing room, and the bar and music licence runs until midnight. Handy if you want the evening to feel like an actual party.

Ceremonies in the barn, outside or in the woods

You can get married in the barn, or outside if the weather behaves. The woodland clearing is the one I’d point you to, because I’ve seen it in action. Kamal and Ben got married there in late June, with sunshine coming through the trees, tearful readings and a registrar who kept it personal. Afterwards, guests lined the woodland aisle for confetti under the trees, which is a lovely, slightly chaotic way to finish a ceremony.

Drinks, speeches and the good bit

Drinks happen in the glass fronted space or out in the courtyard, then it’s into the main barn for the wedding breakfast and speeches. Because the courtyard stays connected through the glass, guests drift between inside and out without missing anything. At Kamal and Ben’s wedding, the kids spent most of the afternoon tearing round the courtyard and the fields, which tells you everything about how relaxed it felt.

After the cake was cut, friends and family started feeding them slices of it. Completely unplanned, slightly messy, and one of the funniest bits of the day. That’s exactly the sort of thing I’m there for.

The evening

Kamal and Ben had a live drummer playing alongside the DJ, and the dance floor didn’t empty all night. At one point the two of them were lifted up by their guests, with everyone shouting and giving it full effort. The barn takes on a warm glow once the lights come on, which helps when things get that lively.

In summer, the courtyard stays the social hub right through to the evening, so there’s usually something going on outside as well as on the dance floor.

How I work on the day

I keep things relaxed. Most of the time, I just blend in.

I photograph what’s actually happening and step in with a bit of guidance when you need it, mainly for portraits, so you’re never stood there wondering what to do with your hands. You won’t be dragged away from your guests for ages. You’ll enjoy your wedding, and still come away with portraits you’ll want on the wall.
