Orangeries, Old Inns and Country Lanes

Towcester and the villages around it have a really good mix of wedding venues. A country estate with an orangery at Whittlebury, a manor house right on the Buckinghamshire border at Plum Park, a village inn at Blisworth. Different sizes, different feels, all a short drive apart.

What the couples I meet round here want is pretty consistent, though. A relaxed day with their favourite people, and photos that don’t eat into it.

I’m Northamptonshire born and raised, and I photograph weddings across this area regularly, from the edge of Northampton right down to the Bucks border.

A Few Real Moments From Round Here

At Whittlebury Park, Ashleigh and Lewis used part of their portrait time to practise their first dance with nobody watching, song playing in the background. At the very end of the night, once every guest had gone, they had one last dance on their own in the pavilion.

At Plum Park Manor, Lucy and Jonathan’s ring security was a young lad with glasses, a badge and a briefcase, taking the job very seriously. Later, one guest from each table was called up to the dance floor in a hat and apron and made to dance before they were allowed to carve the meat.

And at The Walnut Tree Inn in Blisworth, I photographed Fiona and Russell’s wedding. I’ve known Russell since we were 4, so that one meant a lot. Their portraits were a short golden hour walk along the country road outside, then straight back to their guests.

Venues in and around South Northants where I’ve photographed weddings:

They’re very different places. The Walnut Tree Inn is compact and cosy, with lower light indoors, so I plan my lighting around that. Whittlebury Park and Plum Park Manor both hold ceremonies in an orangery and have plenty of grounds outside. Knowing that before I turn up is half the job.

What to Expect From Me on the Day

I’m documentary led, so for most of the day I’m keeping an eye on things and photographing what actually happens.

When something needs organising, like confetti or the group photos, I’ll take charge, get it done quickly and send you back to your drink. Portraits take around 15 minutes, wherever the light’s best on the day. If the sky does something nice later on, we can always nip out for another five.

What I won’t do is stage moments or ask you to redo things for the camera. The real reactions are the whole point.

Do you photograph many weddings around Towcester?
Yes. Whittlebury Park, Plum Park Manor and The Walnut Tree Inn are all venues I’ve photographed weddings at, and I cover the rest of South Northants and over the border into Buckinghamshire too.
What happens if it rains?
I plan for it, because this is England. The orangeries at Whittlebury Park and Plum Park Manor are proper indoor ceremony spaces, and at The Walnut Tree Inn everything is close together, so nobody has far to dash. Rain changes where we go for portraits. It doesn’t stop you getting good ones.
