How to Look Natural in Your Wedding Photos
Why “Natural” Matters
If you’re anything like most couples I work with, one of your biggest worries about wedding photography is ending up looking stiff, awkward, or… well… nothing like yourself. You’ve seen those overly-posed wedding photos where everyone looks like they’re holding their breath, and you’ve probably thought, “That’s not us.”
The truth is, the best wedding photos don’t come from perfect poses, they come from real, natural moments. The kind where you’re completely absorbed in the day, laughing with your guests, holding your partner’s hand, or stealing a quiet moment together.
As a UK wedding photographer specialising in relaxed, candid, and documentary wedding photography, my job is to make sure you not only look natural in your wedding photos, but feel natural too. And the good news? It’s much easier than you think.
Relaxed Wedding Photography Starts with Trust
Looking natural in your photos starts way before the wedding day, it starts with choosing a photographer you feel completely at ease with.
If you don’t connect with your photographer or feel comfortable around them, it’ll show in your body language. But when you’ve found the right fit, you can relax knowing they’ve got your back, they understand your vision, and they know how to capture you at your best.
My approach is simple: I blend in with your guests, keep direction to a minimum, and let your personalities shine through. You can forget about the camera, because you’ll barely notice it’s there.
Forget the Camera – Focus on Each Other
One of the easiest ways to look natural in wedding photos? Stop thinking about the fact you’re being photographed.
I always tell my couples: don’t perform for me, connect with each other. Hold hands, chat, laugh, share a little inside joke. That genuine connection will always look better than a forced smile.
Movement also helps massively. A short walk, a twirl, or even just shifting your weight while you talk creates a more relaxed body position. You’ll forget you’re being photographed, and I’ll capture those in-between moments that feel completely unposed.
Keep Portrait Sessions Fun and Short
No one wants to spend hours away from their guests posing for photos, and you don’t need to.
I keep portrait sessions short, light-hearted, and easy. We might spend 10–15 minutes in a beautiful spot for some relaxed couple portraits, then you’re straight back to the party. I’ll never ask you to hold an uncomfortable pose for ages or give you a list of awkward instructions.
The best unposed wedding photos happen when you’re comfortable, relaxed, and having a good time, so that’s exactly what I aim for.

Use the “Moments in Between Moments”
You’ve probably heard me talk about these before, the moments in between moments are the gold dust of wedding photography.
It’s that second just after you’ve kissed, when you look at each other and laugh. It’s you helping adjust your partner’s suit or dress. It’s walking hand-in-hand back to your guests after your ceremony.
These little snippets of your day often become the most treasured photos, because they’re completely real. They tell the truth of your day without you even realising I’m there.

Your Wedding Morning Sets the Tone
A calm, happy wedding morning is one of the best things you can give yourself, not just for your stress levels, but for how you look in your photos.
If you start the day feeling flustered, it can take a while to shake it off. But if you surround yourself with people who make you feel good, keep the space tidy for photos, and have some music playing, you’ll naturally look more relaxed.
The more chilled the start of your day, the more natural you’ll look in every photo that follows.
How Do You Make Group Wedding Photos Look Natural?
Group shots can sometimes feel a bit forced, but they don’t have to.
I keep them quick, organised, and fuss-free. I’ll give clear direction so you know where to stand, but I’ll also encourage a bit of movement or interaction so the photos still feel alive. That could be a laugh, a little hug, or even a toast with a glass of bubbly.
The result? Group photos that look just as natural as your candid shots.

Why Lighting and Location Matter for Relaxed Photos
Even the most relaxed couple can look uncomfortable if they’re squinting into harsh sunlight or standing in a busy spot with onlookers.
Part of my job is to find light and locations that make you look your best and feel comfortable. That might be a quiet corner of your venue, a shady tree on a sunny day, or a spot with a stunning backdrop where you can still feel at ease.
By removing distractions and putting you in flattering light, your body naturally relaxes, and that shows in your photos.
Looking Natural is About Feeling Natural
Here’s the secret: you don’t have to try to look natural in your wedding photos. You just have to feel comfortable and be in the moment.
When you trust your photographer, focus on each other, and enjoy your day, you’ll automatically look your best. My role is simply to guide you into the best light, give you a little direction when needed, and capture the rest as it unfolds.
FAQs – Looking Natural in Wedding Photos
How do you pose for wedding photos without looking awkward?
Focus on your partner instead of the camera. Move, laugh, talk, the more you interact naturally, the better your photos will look.
What is relaxed wedding photography?
It’s a style that focuses on real, unposed moments. Rather than constant direction, the photographer blends in and captures the day as it happens.
Do you take candid and posed photos?
Yes. I capture both so you have beautiful group portraits alongside natural, unposed shots.
Can group shots still look natural?
Absolutely. With a bit of interaction and movement, group shots can feel just as relaxed as candid moments.
